Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

What is it? A painful condition of the hands and fingers caused by a compression of a major nerve where it passes over the carpal bones through a passage at the front of the wrist.

What is it caused by? Continual repetitive movements or by fluid retention.

What are the symptoms? Tingling, numbness or weakness.

How do I manage it? Wrist splint, medications and/ or surgery.


Radial Nerve Entrapment

What is it? Radial tunnel syndrome occurs when the nerve is pinched or compressed as it enters the radial tunnel. This creates unwanted pressure on your radial nerve, often causing nagging pain.

What is it caused by? Repeating certain motions, constantly putting your arm through push-and-pull activities, a direct blow to the outside of your elbow or forearm and excessively gripping or bending your wrist.

What are the symptoms? A sharp or burning pain, numbness, tingling and trouble straightening your arm.

How do I manage it? Rest, immobilisation with a splint, cushioning of the nerve with an elbow pad and/ or anti-inflammatory medications.



Golfer’s Elbow

What is it? A condition which causes pain where the tendons of your forearm muscles attach to the bump on the inside of your elbow.

What is it caused by? Damage to the muscles and tendons that control your wrist and fingers. Typically related to excess or repeated stress on your wrist or fingers.

What are the symptoms? Pain and tenderness, stiffness, weakness and numbness.

How do I manage it? Rest, icing the area, using a brace and strengthening/ stretching the affected area.




Tennis Elbow

What is it? A condition that causes pain around the outside of the elbow.

What is it caused by? Often occurs after overuse or repeated action of the muscles of the forearm - near the elbow joint.

What are the symptoms? Pain on the outside of your elbow when lifting or bending your arm, gripping small objects and twisting your forearm.

How do I manage it? Rest the injury and avoid any activity causing the problem. Physiotherapy to massage and manipulate the area to help relieve the pain.
