Impingement

What is it? This occurs when the ball of the hip pinches up against the cup of the hips - damaging the surround areas.

What is it caused by? Over time, repetitive impingement leads to cartilage and labral damage.

What are the symptoms? Hip stiffness and tightness, which can lead to arthritis.

How do I manage it? Resting the affected hip, modifying your activities and gentle exercises to strengthen and stretch the hip.





Subacromial Pain

What is it? A tendon in your shoulder rubs or catches on a nearby bone.

What is it caused by? It is often caused by an injury to your shoulder, using your shoulder too much or damage that can happen with age.

What are the symptoms? Pain or weakness in your shoulder.

How do I manage it? Gentle shoulder exercises to strengthen and stretch it.






Frozen Shoulder

What is it? Frozen shoulder is where your shoulder is painful and stiff for months.

What is it caused by? Often occurs when the tissue around your shoulder joint becomes inflamed.

What are the symptoms? Pain and stiffness in your shoulder that does not go away.

How do I manage it? Gentle exercises to help get the movement back in your shoulder. Good posture and pain relief advice.







Dislocation

What is it? This is when your upper arm pops out of your shoulder socket.

What is it caused by? It can occur if you fall onto your arm heavily, play a contact sport or in a sports-related accident.

What are the symptoms? Pain in the upper arm and shoulder, swelling, numbness, weakness and bruising.

How do I manage it? Rest, apply ice and maintain the range of motion in your shoulder.








Rotator Cuff Tear

What is it? When one or more of the rotator cuff tendons gets torn, the tendon isn't fully attached to the humerus.

What is it caused by? This can be caused by injury or degeneration.

What are the symptoms? Pain that prevents you from sleeping on the affected side, grating or cracking sounds when moving your arm and limited mobility.

How do I manage it? Conservative treatments such as rest and physical therapy to gradually build strength.









Tendinopathy

What is it? The swelling of a tendon.

What is it caused by? Often caused by sudden movements or repetitive exercises.

What are the symptoms? Joint pain and stiffness.

How do I manage it? Rest, applying ice, compression and elevation.
