Whiplash

What is it? A neck injury due to forceful, rapid back-and-forth movement of the neck.

What is it caused by? Caused by a sudden movement of the head. It usually gets better within 2-3 months.

What are the symptoms? A dull, aching pain in the front or back of your neck. Many people experience a stiff neck, making it difficult to turn your head side to side.

How do I manage it? Physiotherapy to control pain, restore the normal range of motion in your neck.





Disk Bulge

What is it? When the disks between the bones in the spine become compressed and bulge out.

What is it caused by? Reduction of gel in the disk center, which causes it to become compressed and start to bulge.

What are the symptoms? Pain, spasms, weakness, numbness, reduced mobility and reduced coordination.

How do I manage it? Reduce pain and improve mobility.






Mechanical Neck Pain

What is it? It is caused by the straining of the neck. It can affect the tendons, muscles and discs.

What is it caused by? This occurs through the sustained posture and certain movements.

What are the symptoms? Pain, stiffness and discomfort.

How do I manage it? A combination of exercise and manual therapy to reduce the neck pain.







Torticollis

What is it? Twisting of the neck that causes the head to rotate and tilt at an odd angle.

What is it caused by? It is likely caused by the baby’s position in the uterus which leads to injury to the neck muscles.

What are the symptoms? Neck muscle pain or pain down the spine. Inability to turn the head to one side. Spasm of the neck muscles.

How do I manage it? Strengthening exercises to treat torticollis work best if started when the baby is 3-6 months old.








Nerve Root Compression

What is it? Occurs when a nerve is squeezed or compacted.

What is it caused by? When a bone, tendon or ligament presses against a nerve.

What are the symptoms? Pain, numbness and muscle weakness at the site of the nerve.

How do I manage it? Gentle strengthening and stretching exercises.
